Twizzle me this…

We started on twizzles last week in group lessons. Which were fun to watch. I tried them on both feet and managed to only fall three times. I think if I keep working on them they would be a great piece of choreography- if I dont slam myself into the ice first….lol
They look effortless when the ice dancers do them on tv but they are one tough piece of footwork if you ask me.
We moved on from those to rehashing the salchow and toe loop. Although both jumps are solid. My technique could use some work. I need more follow through on my toe loop. I am supposed to let the free leg kick through and alas…. sadly- it does not most of the time.
The sal, I was tweaking a bit. We worked on entry’s including just the three turn and then holding the edge. I realized that when we did them with the right arm leading I was all messed up. I remember learning it with either left or right. I dont know which is absolutely correct, but it stuck and it really throws me off a bit when I dont go into it with just both arms or the left. I still can land it with the right leading into it but it just doesnt feel natural. Thats what happens when you skate for 8 years you develop these habits. Even if I am not a skater landing doubles or tr\iples I still have been landing most of my singles for a while and its hard to break all those little things I have been doing for so long.

So I worked on checking out of my sal earlier to go into my toe combo. I have trouble with the toe add on. Loop no problem, but toe is wonky with anything. So I practiced really reaching back with my left foot and picking. That seemed to help.

I also worked on laybacks. Not so good this week. I need to lower my free leg just a bit. Its cramping my butt. Seriously, I feel like I cant bend because I have my free leg position so high it pushes my butt up and then that pushes my rolls around the waste and then voila… instant butt cramp!
lol… betchr you never heard that before!
No major breakthroughs lately. I have started choreographing the artistic program. Hopefully it will be ready by Nationals 😉
I modified my freeskate a little to include an inside edge spiral rather than a flat. We will see how that goes. It kind of redirects the path of the program a bit. It could be confusing. I will have to practice more.
My job is taking alot of my time right now but I should be able to get a lunch time session soon!!!
Its supposed to snow alot tomorrow morning.. please cancel! please cancel work!
Probably wont… ah well… it was a thought!

Happy Friday at least- its been one really hard week!

3 yr Scratch into Back scratch Without Dying!

another video… this spin.. its the second one on the video and the move took me forever to get!!!
Yes! Three years to be able to do this much without falling and whacking my head on this ice! Nope-its not complete but its something… and I feel sooo cool doing it. Ha! Thats right, all the cool skaters are doing it..lol
I think I need to get out more.

Dedicated to freezing my butt off…

Yes, I am so dedicated this week!
I went to the early morning friday session and the sunday afternoon session and both required venturing into freezing cold temps!
How many snaps do I get?? hmm. Ok, so all the rest of you do that anyway.. ok … ok
Friday morning I was slow to move. I tried some spins and jumps even my flip. But no breakthroughs. Same thing with Sunday though. It was sooo cold… brrrr. My window wouldn’t even go down when I stopped at the drive through afterwards- it was frozen shut! Yes, crazy ass winter storm froze my window shut. Maybe that was a sign, y’know? Cause I did stop at Mc’d’s and *gasp* got a double cheeseburger and small fries…
oh. It was good.
Anyway, I’ll stop drooling and continue (I got my hot chocolate in front of me to distract me at any rate) I tried a few jumps and worked on my camel. Oh yeah.. thats what I tried on friday- the camel. OOh does it suck. Actually I think I lost ground on that spin… major ground. I will include the suckfest video at the bottom of this blog for all to see. Comments are very welcome.
I tried to get my sit lower… not happening yet judging by the videos. (I’m on my way to being madonna at the rink with my camera) yep… I just tape my little ole’ self all the time now… woooo look at me… I’m a Virgi—I mean– I’m a skater….haha

I also worked on scratch into back scratch- will also include a vid of that… see what I mean?? Tape Hog numero uno – right here!
It was a 45 min session with the youngsters so it was a little bit harder to get things done. When you are moving slower than those who are smaller its hard to dodge 🙂

hmmm any words of wisdom today??
Nope. None. Kind of an uneventful uninspiring weekend- I almost wished I was at work.
Yep.. thats desperate. Completely. You can whack me for that one, I deserve it. I don’t even like work most of the time. But I was that bored with myself. And well… I don’t usually get bored with myself… but this weekend- it happened.
Okey dokey… will comment after tomorrow’s lesson.
Maybe I can get my ass of the ground on a lutz. That would be lovely…

Camel tips for myself before I leave:
Try to keep free leg straight going into it
Dont rush straightening skating leg

Dreaded camel video (looks like I am karate kicking someone in the head from behind, very un-useful for skating well… unless someone, who shall remain nameless, comes on the ice… then it could be VERY useful-but still wrong, uhuh :)):

Sickly and counter turns

I am laying here completely wiped out- I finally caught some type of flu/achy/sore throat thing.
I feel like someone ran me over with a steam roller…..I havent really been sick since last spring so I guess I am due!
I have been skating only 1 or 2 times a week. I started a new job so I am not doing the lunch skate- which really helped me and then there is no freestyle and sat. That really sucks for people who work!
I should go to the fri 6am session…. seriously Its really hard to get up but I am going to have to do it. I skate for 2 hours on monday night during lessons and adult club and then  try to do a sat public session. Its way too crowded to do anything usually though during publics in the winter season.
Anywho….I ran through my program last night for the first time in a month or so….eeek. I was very rusty. I had problems on my sal combos! Thats usually so solid, but I didnt take my time and checkm the freeleg….so when I added the loop on it was kinda crazy. Then the lutz is a whole other issue. The camel has to be put in and I didnt run though it with that spin… I did my sit catch foot spin. I definitely need to upgrade that to camel sit.
My flip loop went off ok. And I added some new beginning choreography. I love balletic movements having taken alot of dance in high school and college so I have been really trying to incorporate new arm and leg positions.
At group lessons our instructor had us doing a really interesting entry into a flip. She had been watching skating over the weekend and saw it and decided to teach it. Which is pretty cool.. I dont think adults get alot of new innovative footwork or entries into their jumps because the focus is soo much on just the basics over and over again. Which is needed….. but lets face it… we are not going to the olympics and sometimes just having a new move improves the ordinary entries and jumps and spins…. So she has us spinning in the beginning. We did full scratch into back scratch. I am emphasizing full scratch with closed leg position because I always just do a one foot almost scratch and then try to step into the back scratch. Its never worked so well before. But I found ( in addition to a few other exercises she has had us do last year) that my back scratch has improved tremendously. At least I am able to get into it without much issue!
I was actually doing scratch to back scratch…. it was sooo cool when it worked!!!

Tips that I learned for the future:
Keep the left arm strong in front until the last moment on the forward scratch.
Fully close the scratch then step wide into back scratch
try to stay over the right toes (i have to think of that)
Keep arms steady on the back…. pulling them in really helps me because my shoulders are always so uneven when they are out.

Then she had us do left foot counters (?) into a three turn for the flip…. at first i thought I was going to kill myself on that counter. She at first explained it as an outside three turn… wow… that took me awhile to get… even now I am very scratchy but still its so much fun! And I dont worry about the flip as much.

Pointers:
Stay straight when picking in for flip (duh.. but I have issues)
Pull the right free leg for the counter
Start backwards and then use right arm to start the counter and check with left…
Try it!!!\
Well dont kill yourselves over it… but it is kind of cool!
I will have to go on youtube to see which skater does that.

Ok… my energy is spent. Its time for another tylenol…..ugh
