To Sparkle or not to Sparkle…..

26 Oct

As I am preparing my program in the final week before the Halloween Classic, I am also helping my friend finish her first no-test program. I have always like to chroeograph and create new dances so its not a surprise that I leaped at the chance to help her come up with some connecting moves.
We are using my old program music to Gone With the Wind. Which I used for my first college competition in grad school about 5 years ago. So its a 2 minute program and as we know, most programs (unless its silver or gold adult level) have to be 1:40. So, I learned how to use the basic functions of a music editing program and cut it down to 1:39 for her. Due to schedules and money we have been working with a limited time frame to put everything together… but I think we have all the elements within her program to make it both competitive at the no-test level and fun artistically. We will finish it this weekend and off we go next weekend to the classic.

Speaking of artistry…. we come to the outfit issues. My friend found great deals at the tidewaterice.com site for her first two skating dresses! One was $20 and the other was $40! She said she was wondering if it would be good quality material and it was! Amazing when you think about the usual dress prices. The $40 one fit well and she is going with that- I think its a black velvet, open back dress. We will see how it looks on the ice saturday!

And then I ordered my new dress last week. I call this my attempt to buy a “non-sausage like velvet dress” because the last dress I used is like a second skin and is this aqua blue with a hologram feature that I apparently missed when I was ordering it from the catalog last year. Note to self and others: Always read the material description of a dress before ordering and always take into account that the model does not have boobs! Ya.. so shiny material – see through areas which doesn’t allow for alot of support straps are not a good thing.

At any rate… I have not had good luck picking skating dresses which fit correctly so I had my co-worker/friend peruse the Jerry dress collection. I said no velvet! and we went from there. She picked one I had not even looked at once.. completely passed over it. So I bought it… and yesterday it arrived from Northern Ice http://www.northerniceanddance.com/store_/figure-skating-c-21.html

I loved it!! I will post a pic here! Its sooo cute! Its assymetrical with georgette ruffles at the bottom and completely A-line (perfect) and its made of lycra with velvet trim. I’ll just say though for Jerrys- if you are above 5’5″ go with a large or XL unless you are very skinny.

The only issue? well- its not major… but there is a good deal of silver sparkle on the flower design and when I took it out of the bag it went everywhere! I came to work this morning and I still had sparkles on my face here and there after trying it on! I tried to brush at it but I have a feeling I will  be sparkling for a few days after the competition and during!! lol. I guess there are worse things!
My friend said to brush at it with a toothbrush ?! ha ha… so I was doing that, I do think it helped a little. And of course… I could wash it.. but does anyone have any ideas on how to get alot of the sparkle off?? Until then I will be twinkling away!

oops almost forgot my little ideas for backspin help that I got from my new skate sharpener.
1. Practice in socks on smooth floor, stand on one foot (backspin foot) and place your hand over your skating foot hip, cross free leg in backspin position and push with free leg foot to turn around while staying over your right hip.
2. On ice: When you are in back spin position hold hands locked out in front of you in a circle to maintain better balance or place hands on skating leg hip to ensure you are over the correct side.

Maybe it will help!!

ta ta! and Thank god its Friday!!

Program changes… and Upgrades

11 Oct

So, I have been fiddling with my program…. yeah.. uh oh… is a very good word for it.
I needed something more than my loop and sal/loop in my program because I was very comfortable with everything I thought I could probably at least add in a flip or lutz.

Yes, I have a lutz which I might have mentioned is like a pick/loop jump. Its really not there yet but I guess its still considered a lutz even though I get absolutely no spring and I halt slightly after I pick.. hence the loop feeling.

I added the lutz out of my footwork which ends with a mohawk so it was a perfect entrance plus now I get to practice it everyday. Or rather it makes it a priority so maybe by nationals it will be a real, honest to goodness lutz. I like it and it flows so no problems there. I have experimented with adding a toe loop onto it but it may be too much. We’ll see.

Now- I put in the flip at the beginning of the program to replace the waltz/toe. I do a lunge (to take my mind off of the jump) and then do a mohawk into a flip. That entrance at least straightens me out a little but its still a hit or miss jump and there is no flow out of it. I may just put in sal/toe.

Ha ha… thats my stock replacement jump for everything. If I feel nervous I just do sal/loop or sal toe- no issues there!

Then I thought about adding a toe to the sal/loop combo at the end. It went ok. Actually that goes better than a single flip any day!! So if I only add one toe loop onto a jump then I can add that in. 😉

I also worked on adding a camel to my sit combo.. but no.. that just not happening. I can’t add a flip and lutz and still do the shaky camel.  I totally bombed in the run through with it in the program on monday! disastrous. So its out! lol

We are working on waltz in backspin for axel prep in group lessons…. its going ok. Backspins are getting better these days. I think its been 2 years? lol.. I hate that spin. So.. my new thing (which is how I started with a while back) is to do a forward scratch and then change to a back spin. And also… to do the plain entry by dragging the toe slightly on the ice while doing the right inside three. That really helped! The new group lesson coach has a lot of great ideas- and they are really helping!

yikes… I gotta get back to work.. break over!!!

ciao ciao!

Lutz or Clutz?

1 Oct

I would definitely say clutz!! My focus this week is landing a decent lutz. Right now I am picking, stopping and then jumping. So it looks like and feels like I am picking and then jumping into a loop.

I definitely need to feel that snap when I pick off my outside edge but as of yet I have not really felt anything. Could be the whole slow motion picking thing. Ewww.

Lets not get started on the flip right now- landed as usual but I am doing the crouching tiger landing thing again.

My sit is doing really well- I have been fixing my entry to get more of snap. Also I am trying to center it quicker usually there is a moment where I am not quite centered when I move my leg to the front and sit. So, I have concentrated on sweeping my left arm straight across and making sure I am opening it completely with my free leg coming around in front. That seems to provide a nice snap and more speed when I do it right! I am also working on getting it lower….

The camel is still a work in progress. When I get into it I am constantly falling onto my inside edge – and maybe that earns Sasha Cohen and Michelle Kwan points but I just fall right out of it since my aim is to get it rotating and keep it rotating. I have to remember constantly not to allow my left arm to immediately flatten to my side- (same problem I had in the sit and scratch sometimes) I have to stop it somewhere in the airplane position (lol) and then keep it there. Work in progress!

I am tweaking my program to include harder jumps… oh yes.. the dreaded flip is going in there. I have not yet made myself do it with the music- I have just been doing run throughs to see where the jump would be best placed. I believe it will at the end… I think I should be warmed up and not caring by that point in the program… ha ha although its going to require some major pushing for me to actually get in the habit of doing it every time.

My friend and I are going to go to the Adult Halloween Classic in Aston to compete- anyone else going??

Should be fun to be surrounded by other skating adults!! I entered the free and the Improv. Eventually I want to have a interpretive program but there wasnt enough time to get it together for this competition so I decided to do Improv. I do that anyway when no one is looking. I get the old michelle kwan program music out and pretend…. ooh and sometimes its the Irina music… my dirty little secret… lol

Wait till I get the Flashdance out… I better do that when NO ONE is on the ice!!

My most recent program run through without the flip…(it will replace the toeloop at the end)
